Goldfrapp - Irving Plaza, 5.15.06
It's only with their latest record Supernature that I've really become a big Goldfrapp fan, so their show at Irving Plaza last night was perfect for me. Supernature got lots of attention, and it was a great show from end to end. I don't mean to look down upon the older records - I'm a latecomer, but I like Felt Mountain a lot and all Black Cherry needs is more time in my CD changer. A pair from each started last night well. But Supernature took over from there, and my highlights all followed - "You Never Know," "Ooh La La," "Satin Chic" (love that ragtime electro groove), "Slide In," and of course "Ride a White Horse" (with dancers in horse masks). The stage show in general met the hype, though I wish the dancers were out for more songs. I'd heard what to expect, but they're much better appreciated in person. And Alison Goldfrapp is a perfect frontwoman, exuding sexy stage presence, working the front-and-center fan, and, at the end of "Train," tearing it up on theremin. My old image of her (see Tricky's Maxinquaye) is much changed.

A fun show all-in-all, and it ended at 11! Maybe I'm getting old, but we need to see that happen more often. (No openers though, and I like those.) I was finishing a post-show beer around what would've been the band's second song had the show been at Northsix.

(And it was my first show since finishing up finals. That was nice.)
