Erol Alkan + JDH/Dave P. - Don Hill's, 5.10.06
I was prepared, really. I expected acid house to warp my mind. I figured a classic electro tune would deliver the thrills. Instead Erol Alkan turned
Don Hill's into a frothing, head banging disco ball by dropping "Killing in the Name of", that
Rage Against the Machine chestnut. Yes, that little sedate rap metal number. Rock and Roll, who knew?
Naturally, there were other highlights of the more predicted, yet still pleasing variety. Foremost was the scorching mashup "Don't Fight Control", which brings two great flavors together:
Primal Scream's "Don't Fight it, Feel it" and the
Chemical Brother's "Out of Control". As if reading my mind, Alkan spliced a short segment of "Don't You Want Me?" from
Human League. Thanks for that coincidence, Erol. He also played the original version of "Waters of Nazareth" by
Justice, not his own "Durr Durr Durrrr Re-Edit", which if you're curious, can be found on his
MySpace page. Also on
MySpace and spun by Mr. Alkan,
Whitey's rapacious "Wrap it Up".
Always dependable for great tunes, JDH and Dave P. warmed up Don Hill's quite successfully. Of particular note from their splendid set was
Spacemen Three's "Big Cities",
Hot Chip's "No Fit State" and
The Juan Maclean's "Love is in the Air".
If you're living and breathing (and not recovering from last night), pay a visit to the Tribeca Grand this evening for Erol Alkan, round 2. He's spinning in the name of
Popbitch, the snarky UK gossip newsletter that is celebrating its 300th edition. The party starts at 10 PM and lasts as long as you can.
