Listening Selections From the Inbox
The Arrogants - "Cool Shoes" (MP3) (from You've Always Known When Best To Say Goodbye, 2005, TweeKitten): You've Always Known. is The Arrogants second full-length album. Comprising essentially three EPs and three moods ("poppy", "moody" and "mellow", according to the label), the album is epic: 23 songs, five of which can be downloaded here. "Cool Shoes" is definitely from the poppy section with its ebullient, female-vocal driven bounce, but the sunny day whimsy is flavored by a welcome acidic bite.

Beat Radio - "Mexico (studio version)" (MP3) (from the forthcoming The Great Big Sea): Scratch beneath the fuzzy, melodic surface of "Mexico" and you'll find a narrator fighting against life's impermanence and the easy out called compromise. "This morning I woke up I had a melody in mind, I felt like I should sing it but I wouldn't call it mine," Brian Sendrowitz sings. "Then I'm making coffee, then I'm making plans, then the song it slips away like oil through my hands."

More:

The Fatales - "Vanishing Act (demo)" (MP3) (from The Stadtpark demo, 2005): Someone's been studying their copy of "The Unforgettable Fire". Nothing wrong with that of course, especially for this particular fan of "the big music".

The King of France - "White Confection" (MP3) (from The King of France, 2005, The Echo): A ping pong of a song, gloriously bouncing about on a piano and a delirious melody. Highly recommended.
