Talk Like A Pirate Day & The Genre of Pirate Music
Unfortunately Talk Like A Pirate Day only happens once a year. In case you don't have it marked on your calendar already, it's September 19. Thanks to Boing Boing for the reminder.

Since I be a wee lad, err, little kid I've loved the pirate song from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, "Yo Ho, Yo Ho A Pirate's Life For Me" (MP3). That ride and song instilled in me an appreciation for pirate chanteys.

There aren't many modern bands that capture the essence of a good pirate song, but two come close. Man Man to me is a quintessential example of pirate-inspired rock. Try "Manface" (MP3) and "Zebra" (MP3) for instance.

While Gogol Bordello's style is better described as Gypsy-punk, there is a certain Pirate quality to them. Check out this site to stream their new album Gypsy Punks: Underground World Strike in its entirety.

The official Talk Like A Pirate Day site also has a nice little collection of Pirate tunes. Download them here. And while you're at it, get your very own pirate name here.
