Quick Takes: Voxtrot - Raised By Wolves EP
There's no way around it. I can't say anything about
Voxtrot without mentioning
The Smiths in the first 20 words. That was 14 words, in case you're scoring at home. Track 2 on this Austin band's new
Raised by Wolves EP, "The Start of Something" is Morrissey karaoke. If you're a Smiths fan specifically or just fond of jangly, glistening Brit pop in general, the mimicry is enjoyable. Mozz haters should skip this song and listen to "Missing Pieces" and the closer "Wrecking Force." Dropping the faux-Mo singing and Smith-lite tempos, these blast away with walls of melodic guitars and swooning vocals. Both songs must kill live.
The opportunities to find that out are this week. Voxtrot visit
Magnetic Field in Brooklyn on Thursday with
The Mugs and
The Consultants. Friday they play
Rothko with
Domino and
Au Revoir Simone.
Jeff at
Central Village is a big Voxtrot fan and is quite excited about Friday night. Check out
his site for more on this promising new band.
FYI: Voxtrot's site has been getting a little too much traffic lately, so this MP3,
"The Start of Something" is not available to download. Instead head over to their
MySpace page for streaming audio.
