THURSDAY SHORTS
- As Jason's review and photos made clear - Kraftwerk totally killed it last night. They set the standard by which all future laptop performances shall be measured. Simply put, it was the most visually impressive show I've ever seen - immaculate projections (so CRISP) perfectly synched to the music. My favorite section was the first encore's Computer World suite, paired with appropriately lo-fi graphics; "Pocket Calculator" got transformed into a housey stomp with the calculator sounds getting tweaked on each pass. Tour De France's visuals were the sharpest though - black and white cycling panoramas with overlaid colors and gridlines. Kraftwerk should just release the visuals as a DVD, they're honestly that cool on their own, but for now I'll make do with Minimum Maximum - their new live record (2 CD's!) that comes out next week. And the sighting of the night happened on the way out - Fred Schneider and Kate Pearson of the B-52's. Check out Peephole for another review of the show.

- Today's AM New York reprinted a Blender quote from Coldplay's Chris Martin - "U2 can be beaten. For me it's no different from the film Rocky. You study your opponent. And I regard them as opponents." And you've got a long way to go, Chris. Though it's become easy to slag on Coldplay, I don't think the music necessarily deserves it; quotes like this, though, are an entirely different story.

- The Juan Maclean's new album Less Than Human, out on July 4, has leaked, and 20 Jazz Funk Greats has "Shining Skinned Friend" available for download. This became one of my most anticipated albums of the year once the big May releases came out; I can't wait to hear it. Maclean will be playing a rare live set in NYC next Friday, opening for LCD Soundsystem. Should be a great show.

- Speaking of LCD Soundsystem, I'm loving their new "Disco Infiltrator" video - it's my favorite of the three they've done. (Thanks Big Ticket for the tip.) It captures a day and night in the life of the band with April's Bowery Ballroom show as the centerpiece. You see James Murphy and the rest of the band getting ready for the day, heading to the venue (I think that's the G train!), setting up and playing the show, throwing it down at an afterparty (which looks like the DFA party that happened at Downtime a week or two later), and then heading home. They sort of synch the show to the song at one point; perhaps this will inspire LCD to include "Disco Infiltrator" on their setlist next week!

- Mark Gardener of Ride is playing Rothko tonight, backed by a band with plenty of Ride material promised for their set.

- Dungen will be at Maxwell's on July 14, two days before they play the Siren Festival. PATH train and lack of Nathan's aside, this will be the much better gig. Visit Pitchfork for the rest of Dungen's tour dates.

- Even though "Bingo" seems to be popping up in her setlists (see: Minneapolis, the Piracy Funds Terrorism version no less), I'm still thinking I'm going to dump my M.I.A. tickets for next Wednesday. I really can't see the show being that much better (or different) from February's Knitting Factory gig. Anyone looking for tickets? I'd just want face value.

- Check out this great Deli Magazine interview with indie rock promoter extraordinaire Todd Patrick (AKA Todd P). It's got good background on what Todd does and on shows in NYC in general. I'm hoping the Llano Estacado, his new space in Brooklyn, reopens soon; I never got a chance to see it earlier this year, but I heard only good things.

- Via Coolfer, here's a good Billboard interview with Built to Spill frontman Doug Martsch. They're taking their time with their next album - spring 2006 is the tentative release date. It's interesting to see that even Marstch had mixed feelings about the band's last album. If their May Irving Plaza gigs are any indication, they will come back strong on the new album.
