Taking Tim Sweeney For Granted
Consider this an admission, because I'm definitely guilty of the above. I've heard more than a few people say New Yorkers are lucky to have so many chances to see Tim Sweeney spin, because they hold him in such high regard as a DJ. As one of NYC's own, he seems to play here at least every couple weeks - and I never seem to take advantage, even though I've been sold on him for a while. (His excellent RVNG PRSNTS MX3 mix was the clincher.) I guess I'm just lazy, and he spins often enough that I always count on next time. That's a bad mindset to fall into; I'm sure I would've gone to all of the Metro Area parties at APT if I'd realized what a treat they'd seem like a couple years later.

So I'm going to be better about this. I picked four highlights of this summer's P.S. 1 schedule on Monday but completely neglected the July 23 date with Mu, Darshan Jesrani, and Sweeney. Part of that is my failure to see the appeal of Mu, but Jesrani (half of Metro Area) and Sweeney still make the date a keeper. Keep track of the rest of his schedule at the Beats in Space site.

And if you're wondering what set this off, look no further than this 77 minute set (zipped MP3) of Sweeney's from May 20, recorded at the Our Disco weekly party in London. It starts with the excellent DFA remix of NIN's "The Hand That Feeds" but my favorite part is about 30 minutes in, when Sweeney plays Frankie Knuckles's "Your Love" and then jumps into Michael Mayer's "Lovefood." (Note to all DJ's: I am guaranteed to say good things about your set if you play "Your Love.") He touches on lots else, including Liquid Liquid, Carl Craig, even "Rock and Roll Part II." Highly recommended - I've been hooked on it for almost two weeks, wondering why I don't go see this guy live more often.

The Our Disco site, BTW, has a few more gems available here - a short 2ManyDJ's snippet, an hour-plus Optimo set from last April, an almost two-hour Erol Alkan set also from last April, and more. The Erol and Optimo sets are especially great; both were recorded live and are clubbier than what each has released on their own. The part when Alkan mixes into the Charlatans UK's' "Weirdo" about 20 minutes in absolutely kills me. Likewise for when Optimo drop the Bush Tetras. It's tough to listen to all these DJ sets, but it's a high class problem when they're this good.
