I saw Deerhoof at Northsix this weekend, and wow do they rock live. Their spastic, noisy pop can be crazy on album, but live it's even more nuts. The absolute beast of a drummer was basically a blur the whole set. He only had a kick, snare and ride and played barefoot while sitting on a milkcrate - badass. The lead singer is about as tall as the ride cymbal and plays a bass almost as big as her. I was surprised that the show had sold out but now I understand why.

I also made it to the final party at Centro-Fly, now closed. Fatboy Slim headlined, with Todd Terry, Armand Van Helden, and Junior Sanchez also on the line-up. I'd heard Fatboy usually goes heavy on the hits but he kept his set pretty low-key, favoring clubby house. He came out in a coffin though, with a full jazz band playing a funeral march, and started with Gn'R's "Live and Let Die". His best moment was dropping the Frankie Knuckles house classic "Your Love" and then cutting into "Once in a Lifetime" by the Talking Heads - outstanding. (The 3 AM - 4 AM open bar, to close the place down properly, was also outstanding.)

Oh, I also downloaded Sonic Youth's freshly leaked Sonic Nurse LP, due out in June. Can't wait to jump in.
